A court in Pakistan has ordered the release of an elephant who lived 35 years in a zoo
An elephant named Kaawan will be released into its natural habitat by court order in Pakistan. This was reported on September 5 by The Times of India. The elephant Kaavan languished in the Margazar Zoo in Islamabad for more than 35 years, while the conditions of the animal were declared unacceptable. Voler was too small for an elephant, zoo staff did not monitor the animal. The elephant was given a full medical examination, experts found signs of malnutrition in the animal, the skin on his legs cracked due to an inappropriate coating on the floor of the aviary. Zoodefenders became interested in the fate of Kaavan back in 2015, when one of the tourists saw an animal buried in a chain in the zoo and created a petition for the release of an elephant from captivity. Social activists and celebrities in different countries of the world spoke with a demand to free the animal. In particular, singer Cher was not indifferent to the fate of Kaavan, who on her Twitter page demanded that the animal be returned to its usual habitat. The Supreme Court of Pakistan decided to close Margazar Zoo and return the elephant to the wild. Kaavan is currently undergoing treatment, after which he will be released in the reserve, which is located in Cambodia. Earlier, the news agency reported the mass death of elephants in Zimbabwe.
